Have Yourself an O Holy Night

I love Christmas music!

For a short time in elementary school I took piano lessons.  I spent the entire year preparing to play “O Holy Night” for our church Christmas Eve service.  I still remember how nervous I felt as I sat down at that piano bench and nervously plunked out a primitive version of one of the Christmas songs I most revered.

As hundreds of us belted out that song yesterday at Cross Point, the lyrics still moved me the way they did my little eight year old heart many Christmases ago.

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
‘Til He appear’d and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees!
O hear the angels’ voices!
O night divine,
O night when Christ was born;
O night divine,
O night, O night Divine.

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord!
O praise His Name forever,
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
His power and glory evermore proclaim.

Other, not-so-sacred favorites for me are…

    Not sure it’s a Christmas Carol but I have a special place in my heart for “Joseph’s Lullaby” by Mercy Me. I love the perspective of Joseph in the story. As a father of three, there is something about the line that says:

    I believe the glory of Heaven
    Is lying in my arms tonight
    Lord, I ask that He for just this moment
    Simply be my child

    I get a lump in my throat when I hear that because it’s what we all want for our little ones. We know the world awaits to mold, change, shape, challenge, encourage and discourage them. But as their dad, I just want to hold them as long as I can and let them simply be my child.

    Love this season and all of the music. I wish you and your entire family a very Merry Christmas Jenni.

    It is so hard to pick a favorite. White Christmas is definitely top of the list. I also like My Grown Up Christmas Wish.
