Say What?

I’ve been reading a lot of stuff lately about the Millennial generation (age 16-29) and how they think. Honestly I don’t feel like I’m old enough to be managing a totally different generation, but that’s my reality… I guess I’m getting old??

And even though there are just a few years separating me from these guys, the differences can be surprising. I’m fascinated by how they process life differently than I do. They have different filters, different lens, different experiences that have shaped them.

What I found even more fascinating was this article entitled “Learning to Speak Like Generation Millennial”.

Ummm… really? I’ve NEVER heard these words. (Yeah, I do sound old, don’t I?)

Have you?

OK, I do realize that I’m at the top end of this generation…but I have NEVER heard these terms (except Moofer…and I think it was on Rob Wegner’s blog), and certainly don’t use them. I guess that just means I’m old??? I think I’m okay with that. 🙂

Well, I am still in that generation..and I still didn’t know all those words. Defriend was the only one I had not only heard but used! I might not be getting ‘old’ (even if I feel it at times!) but I am definitely not ‘in’ anymore!

Compunicate: to chat with a co-worker when you are in the same room using Instant Messenger instead of speaking to them in person.

    brent and i do this.

didn’t know there was a word for it. but it almost sounds like its against the law 😕

Ok, so I’m on the upper end of that generation, and I only knew one word. I don’t even use it, but I knew it, so that should count for something.

After working with teenagers for a while several years ago, I realized I wasn’t cool, and quit trying to understand what they were saying. We then learned to communicate through hand signals, and that worked out pretty well…

I had a “I’m old moment today. I realized that more foods give me heartburn now.

So glad I’m not the only one, but since mostly my peers are responding, that probably doesn’t say much. 🙂

    Tam – I’m with you… I compunicate, but didn’t know it!

Anne & Chris – you are sooooo going to raise the cool quotient around here…
