Don't Give Up When Life Gets Daunting
Our 4th of July family project this year was building a landscaping rock wall. Mid-morning on Wednesday my husband and I headed out to begin our project. We dug out the area, moved gravel, pulled the weeds, and then rock by rock we built that wall.
It took ALL DAY!
It was terribly hot and uncomfortable. I think I spent more time resting in the shade than actually working on the wall. As we were finishing up, I looked at that wall and felt a annoying sense of dissatisfaction. We had literally spent our entire day and yet our wall (although well done) looked rather puny for all the time it took to create it. It just felt a bit underwhelming for all the grumbling, sweat equity and time commitment.
My impatience often leaves me annoyed when things don’t happen as quickly as I would like them to.
And it’s not just the rock walls…
It’s the parts of my character that seem to only fractionally improve for all the effort.
It’s the relationships I need to mend that require more than a simple “I’m sorry”.
It’s the leadership situation that isn’t a quick fix but takes great patience and perseverance.
Our rock wall actually looks quite nice (although I failed to take a picture of it because I was so annoyed). I’m pretty sure that when others see it, they’ll appreciate it’s beauty and function but they’ll have little idea of all that took to create it.
The same is true of our character, relationships and leadership – when we invest the time, sweat and tears into the hard work, others will reap the benefit of our commitment.
Don’t be discouraged or grow impatient with the things that seem daunting and difficult in your life. The result will be worth it!
“And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9
Was this a wall for decoration? or for a garden? Watch–a couple of well-meaning visitors will see your wall and ask you to put one up in their wall too…. 🙂
Great post Jenni!
